About This Class

In the Cecchetti syllabus, the Primary level follows the Pre-Primary level and continues to build upon the foundational skills of ballet. It introduces students to more structured ballet training while nurturing their technique, musicality, and artistic expression. Here are some key elements that ballet students typically learn in the Cecchetti Primary level: Ballet Vocabulary: Students expand their knowledge of ballet terminology, learning a wider range of positions, steps, and directions. They become familiar with terms such as tendu, plié, releve, sauté, and more. Technique and Alignment: Students focus on developing proper technique and alignment. They refine their posture, turnout (rotation of the legs), and body placement while executing ballet movements. Barre Exercises: Students continue to practice barre exercises, which help to strengthen the legs, feet, and core muscles. They learn more complex combinations, including battements, rond de jambe, and small jumps at the barre. Centre Work: Students begin to work on movements away from the barre in the center of the studio. They practice adagio (slow and controlled movements), pirouettes (turns), and petit allegro (small jumps) to further enhance their balance, coordination, and control. Musicality and Phrasing: Students refine their sense of musicality, learning to interpret and express movement in relation to the music. They explore different rhythms, dynamics, and phrasing, aligning their movements with the music. Classical Ballet Exercises: Students learn more specific and traditional ballet exercises, such as port de bras (arm movements), échappé, and simple allegro (jumping) combinations. These exercises aim to develop strength, agility, and precision. Artistic Expression: Students explore artistic expression, incorporating emotion and storytelling into their movements. They work on expressing characters and conveying narratives through their dancing. Performance Skills: Students learn the basics of stage presence, projection, and performing in front of an audience. They may have opportunities to participate in class demonstrations or small-scale performances.
